In case of Dorne the question is whether there's really a business case for a big port. Then came a wave of canal building (great effort but safer than sea shipping) which was more or less over as soon as trains started to appear. Sea transport was risky but so was transport at land and sea transport was easier for many goods as has been said before. If you look at pre-industrial England, a lot of goods were transported from various small ports by ships along the coast line to bigger ports where other traders bought them & shipped them on.

The location around Sunspear/Yronwood is extremely good for a seaport. It should be much bigger than White Harbor or Oldtown. It still doesn't make much sense that there isn't a huge seaport in Dorne. Saying it makes more sense for them to go through sea is like saying traders from Iraq should've traveled by sea to get to Egypt. Going through the gold road will take less time and less effort. Not as expensive when you consider the distance.
